John 2:1-11; Jesus and his mother and his disciples were invited to a wedding. A wedding feast in those days was a huge occasion that lasted a whole week.
When the wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him. “They have no more wine.”
This must have been embarrassing for the host!
Jesus mother told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them. So Jesus told the servants to fill the six big water jars which were standing nearby, with water. Then he told them to draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.
When the master of the banquet tasted the water which had turned into wine, he called the bridegroom aside and said to him, “ everyone else brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
This was the first of Jesus public miracles. What is a miracle? (dictionary definition; a remarkable and very welcome occurrence believed to be the work of God.)
Our memory verse says: (have children repeat memory verse) Matt 19:26; With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
Jesus did many miracles. Only some of them are written in the Gospels. Gospels means good news. Do you think these miracles of Jesus would be GOOD NEWS?
How do we get news today? (newspaper, radio, T.V., computer, phone, text messaging) In Jesus time most of these things did not exist. How did those people hear news? They told each other.
Do you know some of the other miracles that Jesus performed? (allow children to share)
Examples: One day Jesus walked on water. Jesus calmed a storm.
Next week we will look at some more of Jesus’ miracles.
