Lesson Title: Healer of the blind, sick and lame

Memory Verse: Luke 4:18&19; The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

One day Jesus went into the temple and read scripture from Isaiah to the people. When Jesus had finished reading, He sat down and said “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus was telling them that He was the one sent by God to be their Savior. He was sent by God to heal the sick, and the lame and the blind. Many people believed him. God had made these promises many years before and they were expecting God to fulfill His promise.
After this, Jesus went about teaching the good news about the Kingdom of God. He did many miracles to show that He was the one whom God had sent. The Bible says that He went about doing good.
Matt. 8:1-4; A man who had leprosy, came to Jesus, knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” He believed that Jesus could heal him from this terrible disease. Jesus touched him and said, “I am willing. Be clean.” And immediately the man was well. Jesus told him to go to the priests and offer the required sacrifice to show them that he was healed. Leprosy was a terrible disease of the skin. The skin would get sores that would only get worse. The person would lose fingers or parts of their face and eventually they would die. People with leprosy had to be isolated from everyone. They were considered unclean and were not allowed to touch anyone.
How do you suppose this man would feel when Jesus healed him? How do you suppose his family might feel? Do you think he would tell everyone about Jesus and what Jesus had done for him?
Luke18:35-43; A blind man was begging beside the roadside. He heard the crowds going by and he asked what was happening. People told him Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. By now the blind man had heard about Jesus and how he did miracles and made people well. So he called out to Jesus, “Have mercy on me.” Some around him told him to be quiet but he shouted all the more. He was desperate. He could not see Jesus to go to him so he needed to get Jesus’ attention. Jesus stopped and had someone bring the blind man to him. Jesus asked the man, “What do you want me to do for you?” So the man replied, “I want to see!” Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight, your faith has made you well.” Immediately the man could see. He followed Jesus praising God.
Do you know anyone who is blind? How do you suppose a blind person would feel if they were suddenly able to see?
Do you think that these miracles would prove that Jesus is the SON OF GOD, sent by God to help people?
