Memory verse:John 11:25; Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life, He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.
Lesson Plan: See links below
Mary and Martha were two sisters who lived in Bethany with their brother Lazarus. They were Jesus’ friends. Jesus would often visit them at their home. But then one day Lazarus became sick and even though the sisters took good care of him, Lazarus did not get well. Martha said, “If only Jesus were here, he would make Lazarus well again.” But Jesus was far away so the sisters decided to send for him. They thought Jesus would come right away because they knew that Jesus loved Lazarus too.
But Jesus did not come right away. In fact he waited two more days and Lazarus died. The sisters buried him in a stone cave and they went home. They were very sad. Jesus knew that Lazarus was dead but he said to his disciples, “Lazarus is dead, now we will go to him.”
When Jesus arrived near Bethany, Martha came to meet him. She said to Jesus, “Oh, if only you had been here, then Lazarus would not have died! But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Martha had seen Jesus perform many miracles and she trusted him to help their family even though Lazarus had already been dead for four days. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life, He who believes in me will live even though he dies.”
Then Martha knew that Jesus was about to do a miracle and She ran home to get her sister. Soon Mary arrived as well. She was very sad and was weeping. Jesus felt sad for them and he wept too. “Where have you laid him?” Jesus asked.
The sisters took Jesus to the cave where Lazarus was buried. There was a stone across the entrance. Jesus told some of the men to take away the stone. When the stone had been rolled away, Jesus looked up and prayed. Then he called out in a loud voice “Lazarus, come out!”
What do you think happened next? Lazarus heard the voice of Jesus. He stood up and came out of the tomb. His arms and legs were wrapped with cloths and there was a cloth wrapped around his face. These were grave cloths that people used to put on people when they were buried. Jesus told them to “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
Many of the people who had seen what Jesus did, believed in him, that he was the “Son of God.” They were happy to have Lazarus back and they loved Jesus because he gave Lazarus back to them. But others were angry and wanted to stop him from doing any more miracles. They did not love Jesus and they did not want to believe in him.
John 3:16; says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Do you think that Jesus can make people live again? Do you know someone who died, someone you loved and you miss them? The Bible says that when Jesus comes back, he will make people live again. If we believe in Jesus and we love him, we will live forever with him when he comes again.
