Have you ever had an infection? What is an infection? It is some kind of germ or bacteria that makes you sick and unhappy. It might cause pain and discomfort. A serious infection could even kill you. Others may need to stay away from you or they might catch the infection. Some people are born with an infection You need to go to the doctor and he will give you a prescription for pills or medicine. Then you need to take that medicine until the infection is gone.
There is an infection that I call the “Sin Infection” that affects the heart. (place a red heart) Everyone in the world is born with this infection. The bad news is that this infection will kill us. The good news is that there is a cure, something that will take the infection away. How did we get this infection? How do we get the cure?
When God made Adam and Eve, He placed them in a beautiful garden where they had everything they needed and lots to do. They were made to be like God and they were happy and strong and healthy. (place a man figure on board, a happy face and a white heart) Every day they could talk to God and God talked to them. God gave them instructions, they had a job to do. They were to look after the garden where God had put them. There was just one thing that God told them NOT to do. They were NOT to eat from a certain tree that was in the center of the garden. God said if they ate the fruit of this tree that they would surely die.
So Adam and Eve lived in the garden and took care of it and they were happy and strong and healthy. They loved each other and they loved God and they gave names to all the animals that God had made.
Then one day, the serpent, the devil came into the garden and he tempted Eve. She listened to him and ate some of the forbidden fruit. Then she gave some to Adam and he ate it too. Now they had disobeyed God. The Bible calls this “SIN.” Do you remember what God said would happen if they ate from this tree? God said they would die. The SIN INFECTION had started. (Remove white heart, and happy face) Now Adam and Eve would get sick and eventually they would die. They were no longer happy. The sin infection affected their heart. (place sad face and black heart) This sin did not just affect Adam and Eve. It was contagious! They passed it to their children, and to everyone who would be born after them.
People began to be mean and selfish and angry. They did not love and obey God. They began to do many evil things and eventually they would all die. The Bible says that all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23) The Bible also says that sin separates us from God. (Isaiah 59:2) All of Adam and Eve’s children were born with this sin infection. That includes us. There is nothing that man can do to get rid of the sin infection. That is not a very pleasant story is it?
BUT: I am glad that this is not the end of the story! The GOOD NEWS is that this is just the beginning of the story. Because you see, GOD LOVES US AND HE HAS A PLAN. Adam and Eve were not the only ones who were sad when they disobeyed. God was sad too and He could do something about it. The Bible tells us that God made some promises to Adam and Eve and to many others. He said He would send a savior to save people from their sin.
This Savior was JESUS. Jesus is the only one who was born without the sin infection because He was the SON OF GOD. The Bible calls him the second Adam. He was man’s second chance. Jesus never sinned. He never disobeyed God. He was the perfect man. Jesus can help us. He is the medicine that will cure us from the sin infection. The Bible says (John 3:16) “God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
How can Jesus cure our sin infection? Jesus came to die in our place. He died on a cross to pay the penalty of our sin. (place cross on board and place Jesus heart on it) Remember the Bible says the wages of sin is death. We should be the ones to die but Jesus died for us. He was able to die for our sins because he had no sin of his own. When he died, he took on himself all the sins of the whole world. (place several black hearts on cross figure.) The blood that Jesus shed when he died on the cross, is the medicine that will cure you and me from our sin infection.
But this is not automatic. When you have an infection and the doctor gives you some medicine, you need to do something with that medicine! Will that medicine help you if you leave it in the bottle? NO! You need to take that medicine until it is all gone and you are well. We need to take God’s medicine if we are to be cured of the sin infection. We need to receive Jesus as our cure for sin. The Bible says, (John 1:12) “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become the children of God.” As a child of God you are made perfect, just like Jesus. The Bible calls it RIGHTEOUS. That means, without sin. That means that the sin infection is gone. (place happy face and a white heart on figure.)
Do you believe that God loves you enough to send Jesus to die in your place? (place red heart) What does John 3:16 say? Would you like to receive Jesus as the medicine to cure you of the sin infection? If so, pray this prayer! Thank you God for loving me so much that you sent your son Jesus. I believe that Jesus died in my place to pay the penalty of my sin. I now receive you Jesus as my savior. Thank you for taking away my sin and making me righteous, a child of God. Please help me to love and obey you always. Amen!
If you prayed that prayer and you meant it from your heart, then you are now a child of God, part of his family. You are entitled to everything that the Bible says belongs to his children. That includes eternal life with Jesus because when Jesus died on the cross, He did not stay dead. He came back to life three days later. Eternal life is a long time to get to know him and how much he loves you and wants to help you. You can start now by reading the Bible, by talking to him and by getting to know his other children.
