God made a promise to Adam and Eve. Then He made a promise to Abraham and to Abraham’s children. God promised to make them a great nation and to bless the whole world through them. He said they would become slaves in another land but He promised to bring them back after four hundred years. He promised to send a Savior-Messiah.
Abraham’s family became a great nation and God did bring them back to the promised land after they had become slaves in Egypt. But the Savior- Messiah had not yet come. The people waited and waited. Some people stopped believing that the savior would come, but others waited patiently knowing that the God who had kept his promises before would keep this promise as well.
God knew that the people needed help to understand his ways. God is not always in a hurry. He waits until the time is right. So God sent prophets who gave messages and information about the Savior who would come. They would need to recognize this Messiah.
The prophet Micah said the Messiah would be a ruler over Israel and he would come from Bethlehem through the family of Judah, one of the tribes of Israel. The prophet Isaiah was given several messages concerning the Messiah. He said the Messiah would be born of a virgin and would call him Immanuel which means, “GOD WITH US.” He also said the Savior’s death will take away sins and that he would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. King David who wrote the Psalms also said some things about the Messiah. David predicted that he would be betrayed by a friend and be raised from the dead.
It was seven hundred years after Isaiah wrote about the Savior that finally Jesus arrived. Our memory verse says that when the time had fully come, God sent his son. God waited until the time was right. But God did keep his promise. Jesus was born in Bethlehem just as the prophet Micah had said. Then when Jesus grew up he suffered was rejected, betrayed and killed just as the prophets had said. He also was raised again from the dead as David predicted.
God has made other promises in the Bible. He promised to give eternal life to those who believe in Him. He promised to help and guide us because we are his children and he loves us. He promised to supply our needs. And He promised that someday Jesus will come back from heaven to live with us. We can read in the Bible about the many promises God has made to his children.
