Matthew 5:1-16 One day Jesus went up onto the side of a mountain where He sat down and began to teach the multitude of people who followed Him. What He taught them became known as the Beatitudes. This word came from a Latin word which means “blessed or happy.” Most of the verses in this scripture begin with the word “blessed.”
What Jesus taught in the beatitudes, deals with our attitude. What is our attitude towards life, towards God and towards other people? Jesus taught that we will be “blessed or happy” when we desire to be like Jesus. He wants us to be peacemakers and to show mercy. We should meek or humble, and not always want our own way. When people mistreat us, we should remember that Jesus was mistreated too and He forgives. We can be happy or blessed because our reward is in heaven. God sees everything that happens to us and He cares about us.
When we have a “Jesus Attitude,” people around us will notice and we become an example to them.
Have children think of examples of what it means to be gentle, merciful, pure in heart. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? What is a peacemaker?
