Luke 11:1-4 & Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus had a lifestyle of prayer. Many times he would go away by himself to pray or he would pray all night. One day when Jesus had finished praying, his disciples asked him, “Teach us to pray.”
Jesus taught them what we call “The Lord’s Prayer”
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom done, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. AMEN! (added in later Bible copies)
DISCUSSION: God is never too busy to listen to us: –What would hold us back from talking to someone? We might think they are too busy. If you want to talk to a doctor, you need to make an appointment. To talk to an important person, (the Queen or the Prime Minister) you might need a special invitation.
God wants us to ask him for the things we want: Our memory verse this week tells us God will hear us and answer our prayers. Have you ever been afraid to ask for something? Maybe you wanted a new bicycle but you knew that your parents didn’t have money to buy one for you. Or you wanted to play hockey but you didn’t have the equipment. God is never limited by the things that limit us. That is a good reason to ask HIM.
God has given us a pattern of how to talk to him and how to ask: The Lord’s Prayer gives us a guideline for; 1: Recognizing Him for who He is, He is HOLY 2: Seeking His will for us, God has a perfect plan for us. In His plan we can be happy. 3: Asking for the things we need, God has promised to give us what we need. 4:Keeping ourselves in right relationship with Him and with each other, When our heart is right with him and with others, we do not feel guilty. 5: Asking His help to live the way we should. With God’s help we can do what he wants us to do. With his help we can make good choices.
