John 10:4&5; He goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.
We learned about shepherds and sheep and how a good shepherd takes care of his sheep. We learned that Jesus is the good shepherd and we are the sheep. He will take care of us if we believe in Him. (Allow some discussion to review what was taught about shepherds and sheep as a review. Refer to Jan. lesson THE GOOD SHEPHERD.)
What does the shepherd use to protect the sheep? (a rod and staff and maybe a sling) What kind of watering place does the shepherd take them to? (a quiet pool) Where does he shelter the sheep at night? (an enclosure with one entrance or gate) Who tries to come in a way other than the gate? (a thief)
Jesus has promised that his sheep will know his voice! If you know someone well, you recognize their voice. For example, if your mom calls you for dinner, do you need to see her to know it is her? If your friend calls you on the phone, do you need them to tell you who it is? You know who it is because you recognize their voice! Even if they have a cold and their voice sounds different, you probably know who it is by what they say. You recognize their character!
What kinds of things would your mother say? What might your friend or your teacher or your sister say? (Allow children to share) Your mother might say “go make your bed.” But your friend would probably never say that.
What kind of things would Jesus say? When we read the Bible, we are reading His Word to us. He tells us what He wants us to know. As we study and learn the Word of God, we are hiding the word in our heart. Now God can speak to us by reminding us of a scripture or verse. That is one way that God speaks to us.
What are some other ways He can speak to us? ( allow children to share ideas.) God can speak through our parents and authorities. God has put these people in place to represent Him. That is why the Bible tells us to obey our parents and the laws of the land. In the Old Testament, God sent prophets to give people His Word. God may send us His Word through people as well. This may include friends or family or pastors and teachers. Bible stories tell us that God spoke to people through dreams and visions. Some people such as Samuel, heard a voice. God can still speak to us in these ways. Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to guide us to show and tell us the things we need to know.
