(Luke 5:1-11, Mark 1:14-18) At the beginning of Jesus work, He was walking beside the sea. He saw two brothers, fishermen, washing their nets. Jesus went into one of their boats and taught the people from there. When he had finished speaking he asked the fishermen to go into the deep water and let down their nets for a catch. Simon, one of the brothers said “Master, we worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything, but because you say so I will let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They filled both boats so full that they began to sink. Jesus told the fishermen “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
These men left everything behind. They left the huge catch of fish, they left their nets and their boats and they followed Jesus. What they saw in Jesus and the miracle He had performed for them must have convinced them that Jesus was worth following. Jesus did not disappoint them. Jesus became their best friend and they became His helpers.
Jesus chose twelve men to be his helpers. You can read who they were in Matthew 10:1-8. They came from various backgrounds and had various skills. Jesus taught them and equipped them to do the same things He did. When Jesus went up into heaven after his death and resurrection, His disciples continued His work. Like Jesus, they healed the sick, cast out demons and taught about God’s love and His kingdom. They taught others to be disciples to continue God’s work as well. They became “Fishers of men.” These men who close friends of Jesus were also called APOSTLES. The New Testament tells us about them and the things they did after Jesus went up into heaven.
Jesus calls each one of us to Follow Him too. We might be busy doing other things. These might be good things. You may have other things you could be doing today instead of coming to hear this lesson. You could have gone to a movie or to a ball game. But you chose to come and hear God’s Word. You have left other things behind to come today just as these fishermen left their fish and their nets to follow Jesus. When we choose to follow Jesus, He will not disappoint us either. He will become our friend as well.
Jesus’ disciples became a team. They worked together and travelled together and helped each other. Jesus needs His followers to be a team. We must work together and get along together to do what He wants us to do. In a game, each member of a team has their own special skills and abilities. Each one needs the others to do their part. As part of God’s team, you have your special abilities to do what only you can do.
Discussion: What are your special abilities that are needed on God’s Team. How can you use your skills? What are some things you might have to leave behind or STOP in order to be on God’s team?
