John 15:1-17; Before Jesus went up into heaven, He gave instructions to His disciples. (Matthew 28:18-20 & Mark 16:15-18) He told them to go and tell others and teach them what Jesus had taught them. And He told them to do miracles as He had done. The disciples did what Jesus said. They traveled and preached about Jesus and did many miracles but they knew it was not by their own power. It was the power of God working through them.
The disciples remembered that Jesus had taught them a lesson about a tree and its fruit. (John 15:1-17) Jesus told them “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. Everything the disciples did was by the power of God. As long as they remembered that, they could do everything Jesus had asked of them.
We too can only follow God’s will for us if we have Him in us. When we try to be like God in our own ability, we will fail but if we let the Spirit of God work through us, we will become like Him. Jesus called that “bearing fruit.” Galatians 5:22&23; tells us what this fruit of the Spirit looks like. (But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.)
Jesus has commanded us to love. Sometimes it is hard to love someone who may have hurt us. But the Bible says that love is a fruit of the Spirit. If we stay connected to Jesus by asking Him to help us, then it is the Spirit of God that will love through us. He helps us to love that person so that it is God showing His love through what we say and do. All the fruit of the Spirit works that way. When we need to be patient or gentle or kind, He will do it through us if we ask Him.
