Can you remember a time when someone you loved, maybe a parent or a good friend, went away for a long time? You missed them while they were away and then when you knew it was time for them to come back, you were excited and you watched anxiously waiting for them. You could hardly wait to tell them about things they missed and you just wanted to give them the biggest hug ever.
If you know that this person is coming back soon, what do you do to get ready for them? (Have a discussion regarding this. For example, if it is a parent, they might have left you some instructions about what you were to do while they were gone. Ie. Make sure to cut the grass, put out the garbage, feed the dog or tidy the house or do your school homework.) (How would this affect the way you anticipate the return?)
Jesus told a parable in Matthew 25:14-30; Read this from the Bible. The master gave each of his servants some responsibility to take care of while he was gone? Did they do what the master expected? Did he bring back a reward for those who deserved a reward? Were the servants expecting the master when he came? How is this story like having your parents going away for a period of time? Did they leave instructions? While they were gone, did you know the instructions? Did you get busy doing what they asked or did you say to yourself, “They will be gone for a long time so there is no hurry to do what they asked.” Did they come back before you were expecting them? When they returned were you busy doing what they asked? Did your parents reward you for a job well done or did they punish you for not doing as they asked.
2 Peter 3; tells us about how people think about Jesus return. Some think that it has been such a long time, that He has forgotten and is never coming back. But verses 8-10 it says that; With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness. Jesus will come when people are not expecting Him so we need to be ready.
In John’s vision he heard Jesus say, Behold I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. (Revelation 22:12)
What is the best way for us to be ready when He comes? (Revelation 22:7) says “Behold I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.” It is not enough to just know what the Bible says. We need to do what it says. James 1:22; Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
When we determine to believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior and we ask Him to help us become the person He has designed us to be, God Himself will work in our lives to change us and make us ready for His return. He loves us and wants to live with us. (Revelation 21:3&4; Read these verses)
